Founder's Story
HIMZ was founded by Alick Mandandi, a Livestock Specialist and social entrepreneur from Namwala District, Zambia. Inspired by a deeply personal experience with his father’s silent battle against diabetes and hypertension, Alick recognized how societal expectations of male toughness perpetuate suffering and prevent timely healthcare access. Witnessing his father’s and other men’s struggles illuminated a painful truth: Patriarchal norns, not illness, was killing men. In response, he founded HIMZ to challenge the harmful societal norms that discourage men from seeking help, expressing vulnerability, and prioritizing their health. Since its inception, HIMZ has sought to bridge the gap between health and culture by creating safe, healing spaces where men can reconnect with their emotional and physical wellbeing. Through community gardens and mobile clinics, HIMZ integrates health services, psychosocial support, and livelihood empowerment to promote holistic healing for men, particularly in rural and marginalized communities of Zambia.
